Hochul “paused” the unpopular new toll for anyone entering midtown Manhattan prior to the election. Now that the election results are in she is re-imposing the $9 fee, spiking to $12 by 2028 and $15 by 2031. Costs already incurred for folks coming to Manhattan over the Verrazano Bridge have a mid-tier toll $9.1, $13.38 at the George Washington Bridge and $5.04 for those coming in from Westchester. When I lived in Connecticut and worked in Manhattan not only did I pay CT income tax but also NY State non-resident income tax. And that’s why, folks, I live and work in Florida. City shops, restaurants, theater, etc. are just coming back from Covid, this could put the lid back on and keep people from visiting. Employers likely will not subsidize the new costs, more likely to OK a return to work from home, so all of that worker spending will dry up. People and industries are already leaving the city in droves, and Hochul just keeps giving them more reason!
